Suboxone Treatment Program

The Psychiatry Center of Frederick provides a successful medication- assisted Opiate Dependence Treatment Program, administered by Allan Levy, M.D.  Dr. Levy is Board Certified in both Adddiction Medicine and Psychiatry. We accept participants who may be currently using drugs, as long as they are medically stable, can be detoxed as outpatients, and are living in a safe, drug-free social environment.

Suboxone is a medication that contains two active ingredients: buprenorphine and naloxone. Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist, which means it activates the same receptors in the brain as opioids but to a lesser extent, helping to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms. It also helps relieve pain and depression, which frequently drive opiate dependence. Naloxone is added to deter misuse of suboxone or another opiate; if it is injected or misused, nalaxone can precipitate withdrawal symptoms.

Patients who receive medical treatment for their opiate dependence have about one-third the relapse and overdose rate of those who do not.

Dr. Levy sees each patient for evaluation and determination of individual medication doses and ongoing medication management. Program participants also receive treatment of any psychiatric symptoms from Dr. Levy.

All patients also participate in a once a week support group, with different times and sections, online adn in person, available to attend. We have found that group support is an essential part of addiction recovery. Individual counseling is available to address immediate isssues or ongoing psychological concerns.

Suboxone treatment is an evidence-based approach to the treatment of opioid addiciton and is typically administeredin outpatient settings. It can be a highly effective way to help individuals overcome opioid dependence and begin theire journey to recovery. However, it should always be administered under the supervision of a qualified medical professional, as improper use or misuse of suboxone can lead to adverse effects.

Current participants average over six years of participation and sobriety. New members get the support and insight of people who have had years of success in recovery.
